The are really only two reasons to implement 'social media' in a business setting. The first is to learn more about your customers. The second is extend to extend the customer experience via the interactions in a community focused on a particular product/concept/idea. For a great example of social media at work, check out Stonyfield Yogurt online. They have really tuned into the psychographics of their market segment with their approach.

Thanks for the comments Hank and TJ.

I am curious TJ - have you seen any boundary conditions overstepped and what was done about it? I've discussed a range of things with several companies, but there tends to be a lot of variation on this depending on the overstepping.

Great article. The most important step is setting boundaries. It can truly make or break you.

Great article. I meet with Marketing departments that want to do social media but then all the internal issues come up. Do they want to champion a corporate inintiative that will involve many departments and often many headaches. Interia takes over and nothing happens.
